Review: The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller
On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.
Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever. ~ Goodreads

Review:
Can I just write that this is the adorable, feel good book of the summer and be done with it?
I had so much fun reading The Summer I Became a Nerd. I read the whole book in just under 4 hours and *may* have done a little bit of a book nerd happy reader dance.
This book has it all, high school angst, cute boys, secret identities, awesome friendships, VISIBLE PARENTS.
I could write a long review but these days when I have this much fun with a book I just want to leave it at that and not dissect it to death so I will just say I highly recommend The Summer I Became a Nerd. I liked it so much that I’m going to go out and buy a physical copy just so I can fill it with post-it notes for my favorite quotes (of which there were many).
I must confess that I am not a nerd. I don’t read comic books and I don’t play video games so I can not attest to the nerd accuracy of this book lol but I found all the references to be a lot of fun. Also, I understood or could easily grasp all of them despite not knowing the background.
Final thoughts: SUPER CUTE summer read! Go get it!

Doesn't it feel nice to not dissect a book and just simply say that you adored it?!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you enjoyed, Karen!
It might not be the most informative review but that's ok lol
DeleteSometimes dissecting ruins the book for me when I had so much fun reading it - like this one.
YES! A book that isn't all about what we think of as the perfect girl. A bit tired of stereotypes in the YA market this could be what I'm looking for.
ReplyDeleteIt's a cute, light summer read. Nothing groundbreaking but it made me happy.
DeleteThis sounds great. I consider myself a nerd although I don't read comics (other than manga) or play video games often. But it's nice to have a different sounding book
ReplyDeleteAnother really good one is Geek Girl by Cindy Bennett. It's a tad darker than this one but really good.
Deleteah that book sounds so cute. I love that you found another good book :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute reda this sounds like! And huzzah for visible parents!
ReplyDeleteYay this one sounds really fun - if you enjoyed it, then it must be ;)
ReplyDeleteIt does sound fun and sometimes it's good not to dissect
ReplyDeleteOh this one sounds so good. Plus, love that title. I think I'm nerdish? I donno... but I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. Looks like I will as well. So adding this one to the wishlist.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm a nerd in the sense that I didn't fit in with the popular crowd but I don't think I ever fit in with the nerds either. TOTAl outcast! lol
DeleteAh, I need to stop reading reviews today! I already have four books that are "must reads." I was a semi-nerd too (I don't know what you'd call it, I was one of those kids who was really into English and grammar classes and totally was the teachers' pet), so any book with a girl nerd is a win.
ReplyDeleteI love those books you don't even want/need to dissect with a long review - it was just right that way.
That happens to me when i read your blog! lol
DeleteREVENGE mwhuahahahaha.....
This is a cute book for when you're looking for something light and fun to read.
Sure you can write that because adorable and feel good summer read makes me want to read it right away with a trusted reviewer like you :)
ReplyDeletexoxo Thank you for that :-)
DeleteIt was so cute and I just had fun reading it & I didn't want to write a whole thing....because then you have to start picking it apart. Sometime slogging ruins reading.
Heh, I often feel the same way about these kind of books. Like, I enjoyed myself reading this super cute read - what more is there to say? I consider myself to be pretty nerdy so I think I would have a lot of fun with this.
