There have been several “how we met” sitcoms but they always miss the mark for me. Network television seems to force the laughs or make everyone a watered down stereotype. To be honest I didn’t think I would like You’re the Worst (FX). I thought it was going to try too hard to be edgy but this is one of the most refreshing tv rom-coms I’ve seen in years.
As you can tell by the title this isn’t going to be your average meet cute romance but if you can stick with it and past the initial brashness of the characters you’ll be surprised by how romantic and heartfelt this series really is.
Even better is the supporting cast. They are fully fleshed out characters that aren’t relegated to silly sidekick territory. Each one of them could carry the show.
And best of all – I just found out that FX renewed You’re the Worst for S2!

| What the heck took me so long to watch this show? Mindy is hilarious and like You’re the Worst – the characters are inappropriately funny. I love how Mindy takes all the conventional rom-com tropes and turns them on their head.
The finale for S2 is probably the best homage to rom-coms EVER.

ReplyDeleteI didn't love Selfie but I thought MLS was kind of cute. There's also A to Z which felt kind of awkward but I try to give all new shows a few tries.
DeleteI thought Selfie was okay. Mostly because I love Karen Gillan. And the guy who plays Henry is really good looking. I think the show has potential though.
DeleteI love The Mindy Project but I haven't seen it from the begging yet as we started last year from the middle of Season 2. Haven't heard of the other show though.

DeleteYou're the Worst is definitely edgier but I think it's really sweet too. I think the commercials for it probably turned a lot of people off. It didn't get great ratings but luckily it got renewed.
I need to watch the Mindy project :) I wanted to see your the worst but I haven't gotten around to watching it.

DeleteI haven't heard of the first one but I do want to watch Mindy. It's just that I always forget or I'm already asleep by the time her show comes on. I hope it comes on Netflix so I can try it, I do love comedies esp the smart ones

DeleteMy DVR accidentally recorded Mindy last year so that's how I started watching. lol I don't know why they won't stream it! It's not great int he ratings and it would help get more viewers.
I do most of my TV viewing with my guy which means that our PVR has very little room for chick shows on it unfortunately. Maybe I'll binge watch The Mindy Project the next time # 1 has a boys night.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that Mindy is more of a chick show but You're the Worst is good for everyone. Have you seen the League? It's that kind of humor. Most guys would love this series too. It's like anti-romantic lol
