Question: What are some of the long running series that you would like to try?
I’m going to stick with series that I have on my bookshelves already for a few reasons.
1) I gave up on most series a few years ago when I realized I was forgetting most of what happened in the previous books or they had anti-climactic or disappointing endings so I’m not really looking for new series to try.
2) I keep saying this (and failing) but I REALLY want to clear out at least half of my physical TBR pile. Several of these series have been on the shelves for years! A few from back when Borders closed – I think that was 2011?? And some came from past BEA’s or unsolicited from publishers.
3) Dragging my books out for lists and photos helps me remember they exist and increases the odds (but sadly – only slightly) that I will actually read them. lol
So without further ado – here are a few of the series that I want to try. They aren’t all necassirily *long running* – a few are duologies or trilogies but still…
The October Daye Series by Seanan McGuire ~ Goodreads (13 books total)
From Goodreads:
Faeri has always been with us. The fairy tales, ballads, and folklore of the mortal world are only shadows of the true, sometimes terrible reality of the fae. They survive in secrecy, keeping their Courts in the places where the light doesn't fall, existing in parallel to the world we know. They aren't human. They don't want to be. But sometimes they take human lovers, and sometimes, those unions are fertile ones. Changelings aren't stolen children; they're mortal halfbreeds born where the fae and human worlds collide, never able to fully belong to either, outsiders from birth.
October Daye knows how cruel Faerie can be to its changeling children. Born in San Francisco and carried to the Summerlands by her pureblood mother when she was just a child, she was raised in a world that never seemed capable of understanding her. She ran away the moment the opportunity presented itself, only to find that the human world wasn't any better.
Things have been going downhill ever since.
The October Daye books follow the adventures of October "Toby" Daye as she tries to find her footing in a world that seems a little more interested in killing her than she'd like.
The Weather Warden Series by Rachel Caine ~ Goodreads (10 books total)
From Goodreads:
Only the Wardens stand between the wrath of Mother Earth and the clueless masses of humanity around the world ... and Joanne Baldwin is one of the best. Pity she’s on the run for her life ...
Urban fantasy series. Followed by the Outcast Season series.
Wolf by Wolf Series by Ryan Graudin ~ Goodreads (2 books, 2 novellas total)

Penryn & the End of Days Series by Susan Ee ~ Goodreads (trilogy)
Penryn is trying to survive. Because after the angels came to destroy the modern world there are no rules. Streets are ruled by gangs and angels are hunting for humans. When her sister is kidnapped Penryn will do everything she can to find her even if it means working with the enemy. Everything could happen in this new dangerous world.
*I have Angelfall on my Kindle
The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone ~ Goodreads (trilogy)
From Goodreads:
Deep in the jungle of Peru, where so much remains unknown, a black, skittering mass devours an American tourist whole. Thousands of miles away, an FBI agent investigates a fatal plane crash in Minneapolis and makes a gruesome discovery. Unusual seismic patterns register in a Kanpur, India earthquake lab, confounding the scientists there. During the same week, the Chinese government “accidentally” drops a nuclear bomb in an isolated region of its own country. As these incidents begin to sweep the globe, a mysterious package from South America arrives at a Washington, D.C. laboratory. Something wants out.
The world is on the brink of an apocalyptic disaster. An ancient species, long dormant, is now very much awake.
Code Name Verity Series ~ Goodreads (2 companion novels, 1 novella)
From Goodreads: Companion books about young pilots in WWII
Hold Me closer Necromancer ~ Goodreads (duology)
From goodreads:
Sam leads a pretty normal life. He may not have the most exciting job in the world, but he’s doing all right—until a fast food prank brings him to the attention of Douglas, a creepy guy with an intense violent streak.
Turns out Douglas is a necromancer who raises the dead for cash and sees potential in Sam. Then Sam discovers he’s a necromancer too, but with strangely latent powers. And his worst nightmare wants to join forces . . . or else.
Every Day Series by David Levithan ~ Goodreads (trilogy)
From Goodreads:
Every day a different body. Every day a different life. Every day in love with the same girl.
There’s never any warning about where it will be or who it will be. A has made peace with that, even established guidelines by which to live: Never get too attached. Avoid being noticed. Do not interfere.
The Queens of Renthia by Sarah Beth Durst ~ Goodreads (trilogy)
From Goodreads: Set in a world "where everything in nature has a spirit—and where those spirits are bloodthirsty killers who seek the death of all humans."
Shattered Realms Series by Cinda Williams Chima ~ Goodreads (trilogy)
From Goodreads:
A burning vengeance.

The son of the queen of the Fells, Ash is forced into hiding after a series of murders throws the queendom into chaos. Now Ash is closer than he’s ever been to killing the man responsible, the cruel king of Arden. As a healer, can Ash use his powers not to save a life but to take it?
The School of Good and Evil Series by Soman Chainani ~ Goodreads (trilogy)
From Goodreads: The first kidnappings happened two hundred years before. Some years it was two boys taken, some years two girls, sometimes one of each. But if at first the choices seemed random, soon the pattern became clear. One was always beautiful and good, the child every parent wanted as their own. The other was homely and odd, an outcast from birth. An opposing pair, plucked from youth and spirited away.
And finally…
The Conqueror’s Sage by Kiersten White ~ Goodreads (trilogy)
From Goodreads: No one expects a princess to be brutal. And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.
What long running series would you like to try?
There's actually a lot of book series I want to try out, but I forgot the title lol. I'll check my TBR again later *wink But I remember how I am desperate to try out the one from Rick Riordan. I love Greek mythology, so I've been dying to try it out since I've watched the first Percy Jackson movie. It just sucks that I am not yet in the mood for series :(
ReplyDeleteI always draw a blank lol
DeleteThe reason I could come up with answers was counting only what was on my shelves :-
The Percy J series is good!
10 books? 13 books? are they crazy? LOL.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I don't mean to be disrespectful to the authors, and even my dear friend (insert LOL here) Christopher Pike has an ongoing series (Thirst) that's getting longer by the hour, but...
Well, not to rain on your parade, but I don't think you're going to get round to reading them soon LOL. But I have hope when it comes to the shorter series ;).
Random thought - why do some authors have to go and name their main characters something weird just to make a pun in the book/series title? (October Daye, I'm looking at you). I get an absolute NO-vibe from books that do that. Sorry, but I can't go past the names LOL.
The Weather Warden series is done. Not sure about the other but a lot of people said it stayed strong even that many books in.
DeleteAnd I've had those books pictured for 6? years now so no, I'm not getting to them anytime soon. lol
But maybe! because I'm almost completely out of my required reading arc's and my goal is to clear out these older ones. I want to at least read the first 1-2 of each and see if they're worth keeping.
Wow, I thought I was bad for having a bunch of series I want to read but haven't but I think you might beat me (only because I can't remember all the series I want to read). I also wanted to read the October Daye series, I have the first one but that's it. I've read part of the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews and there are a couple of other UF series I want to read but they are always so long! It's normally fantasy series that I don't finish. I think because it's a whole new world and you have to remember everything like the magic system used and past events so if I don't binge read series don't tend to get finished. I might make that an iam for next year, finish a few damn series.
ReplyDeleteThe older ones (the UF series) I got at the Borders closing sale, most of the newer ones were sent by pubs and they interested me enough to keep around but not enough to read right away I guess lol
DeleteDamn! I am sure my post is not this good (wrote it months ago), as always I could not think of anything so there are a million ones I wanna try
ReplyDeleteThere was more than I thought lol
DeleteIf I didn't have my shelf books glaring at me I wouldn't have had an answer either.
There aren't many books I lust over anymore but I want to try these if only to clear them from my shelves.
Oh gosh, so many! I'm so bad with series. I do recommend Code Name Verity and Wolf by Wolf - those "series" are both great!! I really need to read And I Darken and the rest, and I need to finish the Lunar Chronicles series.

I haven't picked up (or even sought out) any new series for the post few years now. I've been sticking to stand alone's.
DeleteBut these already exist on my shelf so I better get to them! lol
awww...you just mentioning Borders---makes my heart sad. I really miss that store.
ReplyDeleteMany of the series that I read though, are more slightly connected but can be read as stand alones sometimes. But there are a few that are a bit more connected, and sometimes I have to read the series again if the series has a new books. Thankfully those series are short, only a few books.
I know they are series, but I don't really count romance series that you can read out of order as one off's. I can jump in at any time - skip a few lol
DeleteRIP Borders. I miss it too.
Oh the Hatching is one on my radar. I think it sounds different. I am not super into series but Six of Crows is one I want to read. I did a list on this earlier this year and I am pretty sure I didn't read any of them yet. Ooops!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Six of Crows!
DeleteWell, these have been on my shelf for years so I'm not very successful either lol
.I read the first The October Daye Series by Seanan McGuire and loved it, I am not sure what the hell happened. I have read and loved all of her titles as Mira Grant. I have both of White's books on audio and fully intend to listen this year. *eyes calendar* Gads the Hold Me closer Necromancer duology is on my list too! '
ReplyDeleteThat happens to me too. I read one or two and then forget lol
DeleteThere are too many series and I can never keep up with them :( I did read Windfall when it first came out and remember liking it well enough but I never did get to the others.
ReplyDeleteThis is totally me:
1) I gave up on most series a few years ago when I realized I was forgetting most of what happened in the previous books or they had anti-climactic or disappointing endings so I’m not really looking for new series to try.
Yeah...they just aren't for me anymore. Now that I've caught up on review reads I may come back to it. I don't know.
DeleteThe October Daye series has been one I've been wanting to try, I always look at those books but have never taken the plunge! Same with School for Good and Evil. Those are two I seriously need to get serious about!
ReplyDeleteThey both sound really good and I have friends who love them.
DeleteI got the Daye series for about .99 each when Borders closed. So couldn't resist that!
I haven't read any of those series but one I have read and recommend to others is the Dark series by Christine Feehan.
ReplyDeleteI think I have one from that series somewhere on my shelves...
DeleteI am really trying to catch up on series reads this year but alas there are just too many I am in the middle of. I definitely recommend Every Day. Another Day was just ok. Since it's a companion you can totally skip it if you need to.
ReplyDeleteI HAVE caught up on review books. total fail at the TBR reads. There's still a few months left to 2017 and there's always next year! lol
DeleteI would totally have to do a series of posts to cover the long list of series I either need to start or need to finish. I too have so many physical books on my shelf that need my attention, gah!!!
ReplyDeleteBut, I have as of three years ago started making progress. My co-blogger at Delighted Reader, Shari, began a reading challenge where one tackles a series a year. I've been doing really well with that. One series a year is doable for me with all my other commitments. I've finished or caught up on Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, Eileen Wilk's World of the Lupi series, and Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series. A shorter series and then a trilogy I finished just this month was Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series and JR Ward's Bourbon Kings. I'm not sure what I'll tackle next, but maybe I'll get ambitious and go for JD Robb's In Death series (its up over 40 books and then the novellas already) LOL
But, for me, its just not getting overwhelmed by all that is out there or on my shelf. You've got some good ones it looks like on your shelf (sigh... I so miss Border's). I listened to Code Name Verity last year and that was a five star for me. Wishing you well on this, Karen. ;)
I read the first JD Robb novel but never felt the urge to continue.
DeleteI am reading Kate Daniels. That's one of the few I've stuck with.
I also have that problem. I start a new series, don't finish it/come back to it after a new book comes out, and then I realize I forgot everything. I don't want to give up my series reads, though, so I'm not sure what to do about that, LOL. I love Seanan Meguire's Mira Grant books, but I really want to give her UF books a shot. :)
ReplyDeleteIt ry to stick with non cliffie series if I start any at all. But those days of being deliriously in love with a series and dying for the next seem to be over for me :-(
DeleteI read Alien series and Chloe Neil series. I seem to stop at book #7. I'm still working on Sarah J. Maas series too. I really enjoyed the other series by Anne bishop and the Cainsville series too. Just some of the series I'm reading too.
ReplyDeleteI drift off after book 3-4 it seems. I have zero patience these days. lol I gave up after book 2 of Cainesville and finished The Others but was frustrated after book 3.
DeleteYou could have almost snared most of these from my Goodreads list as well Karen. One I'm especially keen to continue is the Penryn and the End of Days series too. I really enjoyed book one but with so many new series being released, I'd pushed them down the list. I have a shelf for series finales as well, so no more excuses for me. I might push myself to read two per month to clean them out.
ReplyDeleteI just got so behind trying to keep up with review arc's. It's so overwhelming once you do and have to read several books just to catch up to speed with the series.
DeleteI've heard lots of great things about the series by Cinda Williams Chima. I hope you enjoy it and the others you're planning to start once you read them. I have LOTS of series I want to start. As you know, I've had lots of recommendations these past few weeks. Can't wait to start them. The one I'll read first is The Others series by Anna Bishop. I've read the first two books and need to read the rest.
ReplyDeleteAwesome discussion! ❤️ :)
Thanks for sharing.
The Others is a good one and it's done so you can binge read!
DeleteI listened to the first book for School for Good and Evil and it was good, but I don't plan to continue it. There's so many series out there that I've started and never continued or finished.
ReplyDeleteI think this is the second book so I would need to get the first and...lazy lol
DeleteI've read a few of The Weather Warden series and enjoyed, need to get back into them. I also read book 1 of The October Daye and liked it!
ReplyDeleteI think the Weather Warden series is done at least.
DeleteHi, Karen! I missed you! I love when you drag your books out for lists and photos; I still remember “all my books on the kitchen floor” photo. Lol. I haven’t read most of these series, in truth I haven’t even heard about several of them.
ReplyDeleteMy way of dealing with series is to wait until all installments are released. It helps me to remove from my GR-tbr-shelf disappointing ones. The long running series that I would like to try are Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews and The Others #1) by Anne Bishop
Penryn & the End of Days Series by Susan Ee is a wonderful series. The first book is the strongest in my opinion. I binge read the whole series last year. Actually I binge-listen to the whole series. The audiobooks are good. If you decide to start Angelfall I recommend you to have the second book nearby, because you would want to start it immediately.
Heyyyyyy!!!! Missed you too!
DeleteI haven't even made a modest dent in that pile lol
I used to wait but then I'm so far behind on everything. I just haven't' started any series anymore. That's my coping mechanism lol
I love both the Kate Daniels and Others series. Hope you get to them.
I have all three of the End of Days series. I did start the first one last year but got sidetracked for some reason.
Hold Me closer Necromancer ... Now there's a title to capture the imagination.
ReplyDeleteIt caught my attention at the time.
DeleteI can personally vouche for The Conqueror’s Saga, And I Darken and Now I Rise so far, they are my absolute favorites and I can't recommended them enough!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm REALLY looking forward to that one. The first book was an ebook deal that I snapped up but haven't had time to read.
DeleteThe Hatching and sequel are delightfully creepy! Hope you manage to pick them up!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to give Jane Yellowrock a go, but I started the audio and wasn't really impressed so I left it for some other time.
I'd like to give Chicagoland Vamps another try as well. Same thing happened with the first book for me. We'll see...
I'm wondering if they will creep me out. I'm not really afraid of spiders - not that I want them crawling on or in me though! lol
DeleteMy friend reads the Yellowrock series but she got frustrated by it so I skipped it. I hear the Chicagoland one is good though.
I also want to read the David Levithan series, and my library has ecopies of the first two books, so yay! I get overwhelmed when it comes to starting series that are already over five books. Like, super long series have a tendency to kind of meander and drag, but I also don't have a lot of book money and long series are expensive!
ReplyDeleteI used to really love long series. I would spend a whole week reading them and then the next months re-reading my favorite passages.
DeleteThen the blog took over and I just don't have time for that because I needed to review books instead.
Eee! I LOVE the Weather Wardens. Such a fun series and gah the woman gives a mean cliffhanger.
