unpopular opinion book tag

UNPOPULAR BOOK TAG

I was tagged (an embarrassingly long time ago!) by Boricuan Bookwarms. You can check out her answers here and let me know your picks below.

A Popular Book or Series You Didn’t Like

On the Jellicoe Road – I’m surprised that I didn’t enjoy this one. It sounds like a story I would like and it has RAVE reviews but I was bored and baffled for the whole book.

The Hating Game – I love a good hate to love romance and verbal sparring but these two (especially Lucy) were so immature and annoying to me.

Outlander – I KNOW. Epic love story! Jamie! Well, I didn’t like it so there! lol To be fair – I’m not a huge fan of historical fiction and I like lighter historical romance – but while I loved the beginning and the premise, the whole thing quickly wore out it’s welcome with me. I’m also the one female weirdo in the world that doesn’t get turned on by a Scottish accent. It annoys me.

Popular Book or Series that Everyone Hates But You Love

Grave Mercy – I don’t know that people HATE it. It was a popular series - but I loved it while most of my friends thought it was boring and a few even dnf’d it.

9565548

Love Triangle Where the MC Ended Up with the Person You Didn’t Want them to End Up With

140077

The Sookie Stackhouse series. I knew Sookie wasn’t going to end up with my choice - Highlight for SPOILER: Eric so I bailed after book number 10.

Most have ended up with who I picked but I get so mad at everyone – mostly with trilogies resolving the triangle in the last 30 pages – that it’s unrewarding no matter who it is at that point. I’ve stopped reading books with love triangles.

Popular Book Genre You Hardly Reach For

Other than non-fiction – probably erotica and thrillers, sci-fi historical fiction. Although I am willing to give them a try if a blurb catches my attention. I won’t rule any genre out completely.

A Popular or Beloved Character that You Didn’t Like

6936382

Etienne St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss.

I thought he was wishy washy and let Anna down every single time she needed him until the bitter end. I know he had his own issues and if I hadn’t been told how amazing he was or how romantic this book was supposed to be beforehand, I probably wouldn’t have expected so much and thus been disappointed in him.

A Popular Author that You Can’t Seem to Get Into

Melinda Marchetta, John green, Melissa de la Cruz. I’m totally over J.R. Ward and Charlaine Harris. I used to love both of them but when I pick up their books now I can’t make it through more than a few pages.

A Popular Book Trope that You’re Tired of Seeing

Love triangles but I just won’t read them anymore. I’m not the type of reader that’s drawn to certain tropes or that avoids them.

Like second chance or best friend romances for example. I won’t pick up a book just because it says “friends to lovers!” I enjoy them but there has to be something else that grabs my attention like the setting, characters etc.

I just don’t like when ANYTHING is done to death. Variety is the spice of life! Let’s have a little bit of everything! Write a different twist on a tired trope.

A Popular Series that You Have No Interest in Reading

All of them?? lol

That’s not entirely true of course, but I’m just trying to keep my head above water with my reading so while I make note of books that I’m interested in, I’m not OMG I’m gonna die if I can’t.

Show/Movie Adaptation that You Liked Better Than the Book

12700353

Me Earl and the Dying Girl.

The protagonist, Greg, was a heartless, self absorbed jerk. His friend Earl and the dying girl were better but the book isn’t really centered around them. The movies balanced it out better and I liked it.

*I forgot to mention this - but consider yourself tagged if you want to join in! If you do, leave a link so I can read what your picks are.

  1. Hahaha I like Scottish accents, but I haven't read Outlander. And I like love triangles! Except in this case, I think I'm the one with the unpopular opinion since everyone seems to hate them. I haven't read any of the books you mentioned though.

    1. That would be an unpopular opinion but I do know a few people who like them.

  2. I've accepted love triangles, so I no longer have an issue with them, lol. If they are written well, I think they can really add to a story, but it usually ends up being two great guys and one choice. Just once, I want someone to choose both! Haha

Have you read Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta? It's the only book I've read by that author, but I really enjoyed it! Also, Looking for Alaska by John Green? It's one of my favorites!

    1. I avoid at all costs lol I want the two guys to walk off and be together lol

I've only read Jellicoe Road. I have Saving Francesca and The Piper's Son so I'll give her another try at some point.

  3. Let me meet David Tennant before I tell if I like a Scottish accent or not...but I'd probably be biased 😂.

I totally agree on the "new twist on tired trope" thing, except when I smell the infamous love triangle...or read something in a blurb along the lines of "she/he meets the new, hot girl/boy at school/next door/whenever the hell" LOL." Then I roll my eyes so hard they actually make a noise 😂.

    1. Some blurbs try to pull you in with that hook not realizing how many people it turns off lol And in a lot of cases the book is more than just the *hot boy* but yup, I'm over it.

  4. You don’t like Outlander? Yaa i’m planning to read it. 😁
I’m curious about The Hating Game as well. Have heard great things about it. I’m not so sure now. Hehe..
    Thanks for sharing. 😁❤️

    1. Oh you'll love it Geybie! And probably The Hating Game too. That had a lot of humor.

It's not called an unpopular book tag for nothing. It's my unpopular opinion lol

  5. Hating game was good, but nothing like everyone else raved about.

    1. The girl was so unprofessional that it drove me nuts. I did like some of the humor though. I think the hype was so strong that I expected amazing!

I have several friends that couldn't even finish Grave Mercy lol

  6. Haven't read most of the books in this post yet, but now I have an idea what to avoid ;)
For the second chance romance, I used to hate it too, but I still read some. And I actually love friends to lovers romance, especially if they're bestfriend. Haha, let's just say that I'm soooo hopeless romantic.

The most thing that I hate to read is if there's a b*tchy third party or if the main characters are stupid.

I've read one book from John Green which was The Fault In Our Stars and so far it was good for me. Haven't read anything after that.

Me Earl and the Dying Girl, I've been trying to watch this movie because I'm loving the review and I guess now, I have to watch it SOON!

    1. I like a lot of different tropes but not because they're tropes - if that makes sense. Like, I don't seek out second chance romances but I read them if the blurb/characters sound good. The trope is not the thing that hooks me in.

  7. I've tried so hard with JR Ward but she's not for me. Everyone loves her but I'm always bored when I try reading her stuff.

  8. Hey, more Jamie for me. No problems there. ;) I LOVED Grave Mercy. People are weird. LOL I have not read a Sookie book in quite a while but I do want to pick them up again. It was just so repetitive after a bit but still fun. Good veg type of book for me.

    1. I read and re-read the early Sookie books several times a week back int he day. I don't know what happened.

I think I've since read so many similar books that it lost it's spark.

  9. I stopped a few books from the end on Sookie, I also figured out my choice wasn't going to happen (same choice as yours lol)

  10. Ooh, this is so fun. I agree with you on most of this except Jellicoe Road. Hating Game = not as good as I everyone said. Etienne = cheater. And I loved Grave Mercy and the book after that one. The third, not so much...

  12. Oh boy so many things to say.

The Hating Game actually got me out of a reading slump, I loved it and same goes for Outlander even though I've only read the first book. I haven't read the Sookie Stackhouse series but from the show I totally shipped her with Eric and damn it why why why. I absolutely love the BDB series but I don't know, I haven't read the last one yet because some spoilers ruined it for me and I don't want to read it yet.

  13. The scottish accent is strangely attractive but only when it's been tones down for TV so I understand you're not swooning over scots. In real life when you're on the phone to a company based in Scotland you end up saying 'can you repeat that' far more than is probably polite.

And same! I was not a fan of Etienne St Clair either. He just didn't do it for me so I didn't get everyone swooning over him.
