tell me something tuesday

Tell Me Something Tuesday is hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings and discusses a wide range of topics from books to blogging.

Question: What series that you tried this year will you continue?

Answer:

The Folk of the Air Series by Holly Black ~Goodreads

On a whim, I borrowed The Cruel Prince from the library in February. I’m not a fan of the fae but I loved Black’s stand alone fae story – The Darkest Part of the Forest.

The Cruel Prince was not perfect. I had quite a few issues with it (my review) but I was completely captivated by the vulnerability and fierceness in the heroine, Jude. A human, and out for revenge, Jude navigates and tries to outsmart the fae on their own turf.

“Once upon a time, there was a human girl stolen away by faeries, and because of that, she swore to destroy them.”

I picked up book #2 - The Wicked King at ALA and HOLY SHITBALLS! Talk about reader whiplash and WTF-ery. (you can read my Friday 5 fangirling for TWK here)

I loved it and January 2019 sounds like a lifetime away before the final installment, The Queen of Nothing, comes out.

I am ALL IN!

Other than this one, I’ve pretty much stepped away from series – or at least I’m able to read one and move on without being too invested.

What series have you started this year that have you hooked?

  1. I haven't started this series yet Karen it's been hard not to pick it up but I'm waiting until book three to be released. Usually I start a series and never finish it, so really want to absorb myself in Holly Black's world. I'm stoked it's coming out next month, it feels like the series was released not too long ago. Fingers crossed the finale is just as explosive!

    1. I might give series a go again in 2019. I gave them up a few years ago when I was juggling at least 40 of them!

I think I just need to be more selective.

  4. Hmm...I'm not sure if I've started many new series this year. I'm really trying to finish series, and then start series that are already finished or have been out for awhile (especially since I have the first book in a variety of series that I need to actually start reading).

    1. I've read a few first books but nothing I feel compelled to stick with. I'm more drawn to companion novels if I do.

This is the only one that has me hooked.

  5. Yaaay, I love when a sequel is better than the first! I haven't had much luck with series lately..at least series that are continauations of a plot and not companion novels like adult romance).

I read a lot of first-in-series and never pick up the second book.

    1. The struggle is real waiting over a year for a book.

I was reading so many series a few years ago that I forgot too many things while waiting. That's why I'm picky now.

  10. So many people love this series. I have not read any Holly Black, but she is well loved by the other WLABBers. I have not been starting too many series lately, because I have been reading mostly contemporaries. Those are more companions than series, but one series I did fall in love with this year Chloe Snow's Diary. Love her and the books were fabulous.

    1. I bet you would like her Curse Workers series Sam. I don't know why I like this one since I don't like the fae, but I do.

  11. I want to read these- I like a fae story once in a while, especially if they're on the dark side a bit, and this sounds like it totally delivers in that sense. I just need to get to 'em.

    1. I think this one is so heavily centered on being human in a fae world so I like it.

  14. I so wanted to read The Cruel Prince but I held off. Then it went on sale and I snapped it up but still didn't read it. Now, I'm waiting on the next book coming out so, if I like it, I don't have to wait to see what happens next! I'm terrible for doing this...

  17. NNNOOO! Sworn off starting any books that form a series unless I already have them in the house or they are sent by an author/publisher for me to review (and even then I think twice), I may well have to add these to my Wish List.

    1. I agree. I've been avoiding them myself. Even if I read a first book sent by a publisher, I can let it go pretty easily.

  18. I have heard that this series is really good and I need to try it! I've only read the Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black. I just started both Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa and Red Rising series by Pierce Brown and loved both first books so I can't wait to read more :D

  23. I cannot wait for the next book in this series! The first book was so so good and I'm so ready for the next one. It's not often I read the first book in a series and remember it so well and am still as excited to read the next book now as I was when I first finished the last one.
