My Monday Musings...

I’m doing better, mentally, this week than last. It’s been raining, which you would think would be depressing, but it kicked the season into fall so I don’t feel like I’m caught in some weird seasonal limbo anymore.

I have an appointment with my new primary care Dr this week. I dropped off  the form to have my FL records transferred but they seem to have lost it so that bodes well. lol

We’re in the last few weeks of the farmers market and that’s the one thing I’m really going to miss over the winter. They have the most amazing fresh fruit and veggies out here. We had a pretty good market in FL but this market blows it away.

Look at these adorable mini kiwis they had this week! You eat them whole – no fuzzy skin to peel first.

Fonzi had his 2 week re-check for his dental extractions and his mouth looks great. He’s back to normal food and treats. We still have to deal with his wonky bloodwork/urinalysis though. We’re retesting everything in 2 weeks to see if maybe his periodontal disease caused it. If not then we’re off to a specialist and ultrasounds. 😟

READ:

I’m still not in a reading mood lately but I finished the Penryn & the End of Days trilogy (Goodreads). SO trippy and weird!

Book #1, Angelfall, was good. It’s the apocalypse and angels are hunting humans. Very cool world – kind of different take on angels, Penryn and Raffe (a fallen angel who has his wings brutally stripped from him) have a cool chemistry. It’s not your typical swoony YA deal – more of a grudging respect over time and I was digging it. It’s an ultra violent world though with experimentation on humans (including children) and it’s not for the squeamish reader.

Book #2, World After, is not as great as Angelfall but still pretty good, especially if you are into non stop action and gore. This is surprisingly graphic and dark for YA. But this is also where some of Ee’s complex story arc’s (the angels history & relationships/dynamics – Penryrn’s mentally ill mother) kind of get pushed back in favor of yet another fight. The Penryn and Raffe relationship is also sidelined a bit since he isn't in this one as much but I like how this focuses more on Penryn’s relationship with her sister (who has survived a gruesome experiment) and other survivors.

Book #3, End of Days was disappointing. A fairly complex world and slow building romance developed over the last 2 books turns into – waaa – why doesn’t Raffe want me and all the angel conflict is resolved through hasty flashbacks and and Raffe dropping some knowledge – that if he just said it in book #1 would have fixed all of this.

I was told this was supposed to have been a 5 book series. In some ways, that could have fleshed out the angel characters better because that ended poorly. And maybe there was more to Penryrn’s mom’s behavior? But we’ll never know. On the other hand – so much of this could have been cut and better told in a duology. It felt like Ee wanted to include any cool thing she came up with and it was A LOT.

So….glad I read it. It was a wacky ride that I mostly enjoyed but wish it had a stronger ending.
The entire series is available on KU if you have it and want to give it a try at no (additional) cost to you.

READING:

I didn’t get to anything else that was on my planned TBR list from last week but I did pick up Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev (Goodreads) and I’m really enjoying it! The couple is at the *I hate you* stage right now but the sparks are starting to fly.
😍

READING CHALLENGE:

2019 Reading Challenge

2019 Reading Challenge
Karen has read 68 books toward her goal of 80 books.
hide

I’m doing ok but my reading is slowing down again. I’m feeling good about raising my goal to 80 instead of 100 lol

TBR pile # update – do you remember the picture of my cart filed with what remains of my books to read? It was at 50 and is now down to …..drumroll please… 37!!

WATCHED:

Tall Girl on Netflix (skip it), Ferdinand (the newer Disney movie) – I thought this was really sad most of the time but I guess kind of cute in the end, Mortal Engines – cool concept – an only ok movie. I’m planning on trying HBO’s Succession this week.

So what should I be reading or watching this week??

  1. Those kiwis are really cute, but I refuse to eat any fruit that has a skin (except strawberries) - it doesn't matter if it's soft.

You mean they lost your request or your records?

Finger crossed for GumBoy LOL - I'm sure it will turn out to be something mouth-related.

It's odd that a series that had been envisioned as a 5-book-long monster should feel unnecessarily long as a trilogy. It's a pity that it went downfall.

37?!? Wow. Watch out, you could run out of books to fall back on! 🀣

    1. IT would be too much a pain to peel something that small I think lol

They lost my release form (giving my previous Dr permission to send over my records).

It didn't necessarily feel long as much as crammed with things. To me - so much of it felt irrelevant (maybe because it got cut short?) and could have just been skipped and been a duology. I'm sure at 5 books the bigger concepts could have been developed more but I'm really impatient when a series gets that long. There better not be filler you know??

  3. I'm glad you're doing well. We're having quite a hot September. It's like 28 C right now. I'm ready for Fall, to be honest. Even though that will usher in the Winter.

I hope you'll find the right books to pump up your reading gears again.

    Have a great week!

  4. The tiny kiwi is so cute!! And yay for your pup! I hope they're able to figure it all out. Mine has to have her teeth cleaned next month. I absolutely agree with you on End of Days. It had the potential to be so much better!

  6. Poor Fonzie. I hope he's ok. I am glad to hear you are enjoying P&P&OF. I had my eye on that one, and my library has it, so there's a chance I may read it.

    1. He's acting completely normal - I think we just stumbled onto something accidentally. Hopefully, it's either nothing or something we're catching early.

The book is really fun so far!

  7. Glad the week was better than the previous one. Hope the appointment goes well. It’s been so long since I’ve had any kiwi. And I’ve never seen any so small. Adorable!

  10. Great news about Fonzi's little chompers, I know how worried you were about him going under. Hopefully now that his teeth have been removed, his bloodwork will come back normal. Infections and inflammation can be really nasty. I'm glad you're feeling better this week Karen, the weather has such a profound effect on my mental health as well. If you ever need to chat or just need someone to listen, please reach out anytime.

    1. He had some throat issues but they were very careful -using a smaller trach tube. *fingers crossed* it was his teeth messing up his labs.

{hugs Kelly} I'm doing better. The move has been a big adjustment for me but I'm getting there.

  11. We tried kiwi berries (that's what they were sold as here) last year and they were awesome.
I'm so happy that autumn is here! On the drive to work, the leaves had actually turned gold/orange/brown... It was so pretty.

Fingers crossed for Fonzi's results being because of the teeth! Then the problem has already been fixed.

    1. It really feels like autumn this week. Even though it means the cold is coming soon - I'd rather it pick a season instead of being in limbo lol

  12. I'm so pleased about Fonzi's teeth being better! Having spent six months getting dental treatment done, I have sympathy for him! Fingers crossed for the blood work, that is was connected to the teeth or is something easily dealt with. I'm glad you feel a bit better overall. I struggle with my own mental health so I feel for you with that. Ooh kiwis that don't need peeled! I like the sound of that!

    1. He was such a trooper about the whole thing! I would have been sipping through a straw and crying.

I've had issues with anxiety in the past but haven't in a long time so this is not fun return to things. I think I just have to find my way with all the changes here.

      the kiwi's are awesome!

  13. Oh dear! I definitely agree that Angelfall was good and then the second one was less as good. But it's a shame about the finale being disappointing. I was excited :(

  14. Yay for no more seasonal limbo, I get how that can sort of throw you off. And look at those kiwis! I've never seen tony bite sized kiwis before and now I want some, so much easier to eat. I really want to read that Sonali Dev book, I've not managed to convince myself to buy yet, though. I might treat myself, or read the sample and see if this is the book that I'm in the mood for as I feel a bookish funk coming if I don't find something soon.

  15. Good to hear your mood has lifted some with the change in weather. πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

Sending good vibes that Fonzie's dental problems were the root of his wonky test results. 🐾✨

I also hope your reading mood kicks in. Have a wonderful new week. 🌞
