Whatever Wednesday: Movie Time

I’ve been watching more movies that reading. The Tiny Terrors seem to be quieter in the evening but I still can’t focus enough to read at that point.

So here are a few that Kevin and I watched, and several movies my friend and I have watched for our weekly, virtual *date nights*.

Rocketman – included with Amazon Prime Video ~ I had read Elton John’s autobiography, Me, just last week so this was interesting to compare the two. Rocketman follows John’s life starting from childhood through to his years of addiction and then rehab.
Although not based on the book, it covered similar territory but the movie consolidated a lot of his life and blended several separate events into one. It also left out a lot of major things like the inspiration for his going to rehab – the death of Ryan White from AIDS. But there’s no way you can cover so many things in a movie so it’s fine.

The movie was more of a musical/fantasy with over-the top surreal detours and it was an absolutely perfect way to reflect the artists personality. Such a unique and fun  biopic!

Never Have I Ever – Netflix ~ This is a coming of age comedy-drama about Indian American girl Devi Vishwakumar. Lots of YA-ish drama with grief, family, friends, boys and culture. I watched it (virtually) with a friend and we were kind of eh…at first (Devi truly likes to learn things the hard way) but were totally hooked by the 3 episode and binge watched the series in two days. It’s funny, frustrating and heartbreaking.

My Spy – included with Amazon Prime Video ~ A hardened CIA operative JJ (Dave Bautista) has is tasked with surveilling a mom and her 9 year old daughter, Sophie. Sophie blows their cover and blackmails JJ into teaching her to be a spy. Hilarity ensues. This was sort of over-the-top ridiculousness but also really cute.

What Men Want – included with Amazon Prime Video ~ This is a gender swapped remake of What Women Want. Not great and s kind of rushed ending but still quite a few laughs.

Guns Akimbo – included with Amazon Prime Video ~ Daniel Radcliff is Miles, a mild mannered man with a horrible boss, pining away for his maybe girlfriend, Nova, and is a part time troll – spouting off angry, offensive things on Skizm –  a live streaming game where real people literally fight to the death while people watch and comment.

Then one night Miles gets a visit by a gang that attaches guns to his hands and tosses him into the game to kill Nix – the top player.

Pure adrenaline shoot em up movie. I guess it’s trying to say something about online culture and trolls but it’s really just a mindless gore. If you like this sort of thing (& I do lol) it was fun.

What are you all watching (besides Hamilton - which I have not seen - lol)?

  1. I think I am the only one not watching Hamilton LOL Even though I love musicals. I love watching movies though, but lately, I have been catching up on Passionflix films. Loving those. Although over the holiday I watched many of my favorite patriotic films which was fun too.

    Great picks you have here!!

  2. I was on the fence over watching Rocketman but I think I'll give it a watch now. You've convinced me. ;)

I still haven't watched Hamilton. I will though. I'm curious as to what the fuss is about but that thing is LONG! Almost 3 hrs! At the theatre, that's acceptable but it's more than I'm used to for home viewing when I'm not properly motivated.

    1. It's weird but fitting for him and not a standard - run through each event kind of biopic.

  3. hah, I DID watch Hamilton. I just finished the TV show iZombie this evening (all the seasons are on Netflix). It's so good - I'm bummed it's over. I guess I need to move on to something else. I'm a few episodes away from finishing season 5 of Schitt's Creek. The sixth is the final season, but I don't know when it will be on Netflix. Hopefully soon! I need more!!!

Dan Radcliffe is in such random movies, but I love it. I've seen most of his films and I really do love them.

  4. Not a fan of Elton John to begin with but even if I were I can't say I'd find this film appealing in the same way i didn't enjoy the Freddie Mercury one.

I did enjoy What Women Want and could see us watching What Men Want if only out of curiosity.

We have actually been watching more box sets then films, the last week or two saw us watching the latest season of This Is Us and then Hunters with the latest season of Lucifer next on the list.

    1. I really didn't like the Mercury movie but this one didn't try to stick to a formula so it worked better for me.

I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan though - I just most of the mainstream hits.

  5. We have very different tastes in movies! The only one I have watched is Hamilton (several times). Even the kids are singing the songs now, haha. :)

  6. Hmmm... we've been watching the new (final) season of Agents of SHIELD and World of Dance. We've also been rewatching favorite episodes of Psych in preparation for the new movie next week. We also started watching The Chronicles of Shannara on Netflix. Now we are looking forward to the new season of the Umbrella Academy out at the end of this month.

  7. I'm not a big fan of musicals overall and to be honest Hamilton doesn't really interest me! I do plan to watch Rocketman eventually.

    1. Same. Rocketman had more musical inspired moments than I expected - not sure why because...musician lol but it was done in such an unconventional way that I liked it.

  8. I haven't seen any of these and since I don't watch musicals I haven't seen Hamilton either.

  9. I haven't been watching anything but then again I never do. Ha! I am mildly interested in the Elton John movie but I'll probably listen to the audio book and see how I feel after that.

    1. There's a lot of boy drama that seems cliche at first but it turns out being something deeper.

    1. I don't usually watch a lot of new TV. I just turn on the same old syndicated shows I've watched 100's times already. Especially cartoons lol

    1. I'm not a huge musical fan and I automatically back off whenever *everyone* is doing something lol

My Spy is kind of silly, lighthearted fun. Especially if you want a family movie.

  14. Aside from Rocketman, I haven't heard of any of these. Although, I don't scroll through Amazon Prime. Clearly I should be. One movie that I want to see is NERVE with Emma Roberts. I went to read the book the other day and all the reviews said the book was not that great, but the movie was really good. So now I want to watch it.

    1. I haven't used Prime for tv in over a decade. I started a weekly movie date with a friend and we want free so we started checking out what they had.

I've heard of Nerve but not sure what it is.
