Review: The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams

"One cancelled wedding

When the day finally comes for Annie to marry Alexander, the last thing she expects is to be left standing at the altar. She was so sure he was Mr Right. Now, she has no idea how she could have got it so wrong.

One unexpected Encounter After a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend who reminds her of who she used to be, Annie takes a vow of her own: she’ll say yes to every opportunity that comes her way from now on.

One spare ticket for a honeymoon Could a spontaneous trip with Patrick be the way to mend Annie’s heart? She’s about to find out as she embarks on her honeymoon – with a man who’s not her husband… ~ Goodreads

😐I have to admit that it took me a little bit to come around to liking Annie. She's left at the alter by her fiancé and goes into free fall. It's completely understandable! but she's so low on herself, let's her mother run right over her and has that Bridget Jones - I'm so quirky - quality that always gets her in odd situations and while I liked her, I also found her a little off putting.

She runs into Patrick, a man that she used to go to camp with as a kid and who remembers her old free spirited, confidant persona. His laid back, live in the moment, attitude starts to wear off on her - but that felt a little off at first too. He clearly likes her but she's completely oblivious and he's almost too laid back and good to be true.

😍Once they head off together, as friends, to take her honeymoon (offered by her former fiancés parents) in Australia, this story really pulls together and you watch Annie, the light, happy girl she was from camp take chances and shed her current passive, always making herself smaller to please others side. There is more to Patrick and he needs this friendship and trip just as much as Annie to shed some of his demons as well.

Overall: After a bumpy start, I found both Annie and Patrick charming, if not a little silly, and really loved how they lifted the other up and filled in the broken bits with support, love and respect. They both had a lot of growth throughout. 👍

  1. That's a really fun premise. I love that she takes her honeymoon with a childhood friend. That's cute

    1. They weren't so much friends as just going to camp together but it's fun that they knew past versions of each other before they're life took turns for the worst.

  2. I really like the idea of them being supportive of one another and lifting each other up, but I'm not sure this is one I would gravitate to.

  4. This sounds a lot like Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren just with different characters.

    1. And in the UK/Australia so it had more of that kind of humor.

I liked The Unhoneymooners a bit more but this was cute.
