Question: What are the books/authors you pick up when you need a comfy read?
Answer: I don't really have any go-to, comforting reads these days. I haven't re-read a book in years and I tend to read new authors and just jump around genres now.
Years ago, I would say all the PNR series. I would read and re-read the Sookie Stackhouse, BDB, Night Huntress, WVMP Radio vampire series several times per week!
Then it was romance. Any romance - YA, adult, series, stand-alones, anything. I just like the easiness and guaranteed HEA of the genre and they tend to be quick reads for me.
Then I got bogged down by arc's, schedules reading slumps and I'm barely reading at all lol It's hard for me to find a book that makes me go ahhhhh. I'm kind of afraid to go back to some of the series I've loved int he past incase I now see all the flaws.
So, I'll just say that I find any reading comforting right now. Whatever it is, because I'm back to reading for fun so it's whatever I am enjoying at this moment - no pressure - therefore making it a comfy read.
I am right there with you on the romance. When I feeling dumpy, I know a romance will perk me up. BUT I have to make sure it's an author I trust who understands the rules - that we get an HEA.
ReplyDeleteYes!! It must be a HEA! That would be the absolute worst if it didn't end that way when you're looking for a comfort read.
DeleteI have re-read either Heartstrikers or The Others every year now, it is so comforting. I am glad I found something to spice things up
ReplyDeleteRight now, reading totally unexpected genres and genre hopping has been working but my heart always belongs to a good romance :-)
DeleteI don't have a go-to either. I tend to look towards a genre that I haven't read in a while, which could be urban fantasy, PNR, Sci-fi, dark romance or something else!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I've been doing lately. I'm all over the place and it's all so new to me, it's fun and comforting in it's own way.
DeleteThat makes sense. I like to reread. I usually pick up one of my favorites when I need something comforting. :)
ReplyDeleteI used to re-read so much until *obligation* blogging took hold of me lol I really want to get back to it at some point.
DeleteI also used to have more comfort genres than specific books. Then I realized I do have a comfort series or two, but I've also been not doing much or any rereading lately. But I agree that really any reading, as long as I'm not feeling obligated to do it, is comfort!
ReplyDeleteExactly!
DeleteWise words!
ReplyDeleteI am old and wise lol
DeleteI wouldn't say comfy is the word, but I find that mysteries/thrillers are usually good choices when I want to really get sucked into a book, or want a quick read!

I feel like comfort reads apply to me as more as a reader a decade ago. I had a lot of them but not anymore.
DeleteMy comfort read used to be Harry Potter but I've moved on from that. I now turn to Jennifer Crusie books, specifically Bet Me or Charlie All Night, or Lucy Parker's London Celebrities series. I have read those books so many times it's ridiculous. But if I am in the mood for something with more fantasy/paranormal vibes then I always turn to an Ilona Andrews book. All else fails I read some fanfiction because it feels easier to read than books sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI had SO many comfort reads years ago but 1) I'm not sure I would still like them a decade alter and 2) I'm such a mood reader right now (if I'm reading at all!) I'm just bouncing around to all kinds of stories and genres.
DeleteI agree - no time for re-reads. Even if I didn't have my books scheduled, there are too many books I've not read out there, so I pick those up instead.
ReplyDeleteI used to ALL the time years ago. I guess it was more skim re-reading. I would go to my favorite parts lol Then I felt like I didn't have time and now, I just don't feel like it I guess.
DeleteI can't say that I have any specific comfort read books or authors. I guess if I want something dependable that's sure to give me an HEA and not a lot of drama/angst, I'd pick one of my favorite romance authors who stick to the lighter side.
ReplyDeleteMy absolute favorite comfort reads are a sweet, low angst romance or a rom com. those are so few and far between right now and aren't always guaranteed so I don't have anything reliable to go to.
DeleteI'm into thrillers lately for some reason, and mysteries. I mean I've always read them, more or less, but I'm reading way less SF these days. Although there's some good stuff out there now.
ReplyDeleteI am ALL over the place now. Right now I'm reading a cozy mystery, a romance and mid grade about Zombies lol
DeleteWhen I need a comfort read I usually pick up a cowboy romance by Diana Palmer.
ReplyDeleteI've read a few of hers
DeleteGosh, I don't know. 🤔 The past couple of years I scheduled a re-read a month, but this year I've re-read nothing so far. I guess the Dune books would come the closest to a comfort re-read. This is a hard question. 😛
ReplyDeleteIf you asked me this in my early blogging days, I would have had at least 10 books/authors but now I'm just happy to want to read anything lol
DeleteLove your take on this! Oddly enough, I find some good ol' End of Days™ fare the most comforting, yet I have no idea why? Maybe because these characters can survive literally anything, so maybe I can too? No idea really, but any kind of apocalyptic or dystopian situation really makes me happy! Not sure what that says about me as a person, now that I think about it 😂
ReplyDeleteI get that! My friend is reading nothing but survivalist stories right now. Be prepared or at least know what not to do lol
