TMST: I'm playing topic catch-up! Book sitting the longest on my TBR pile, Blogging platforms, bookish memorabilia, and being the odd one out

I'm playing catch up with TMST. Life got in the way and I missed several weeks worth of questions. So here we go!

4/12 Question: What book has been sitting on your TBR pile the longest?

Answer: I believe these two - there might be a few more but I couldn't find them. They are both from the 2010  Borders bookstore closing sale lol I'm not even sure why I haven't read them yet.

4/19 Question: How did you choose your blogging platform?

Answer:
I don't really remember. I had a free WP blog before this one (in 2009 I think) - about politics if you can imagine lol Not one single soul ever saw it and I had no idea how to blog anyway so I quickly abandoned it.

Then I think I saw the Blogger platform somewhere and they made it really easy to set up and find other blogs so I gave it a shot and somehow it took off so here I am. I've often thought of switching over to WP but I co-blogged on there years ago and hated it. I do love all the customizable plug-ins but I just don't blog enough (or get enough views anymore) to make paying for a host and migrating worth it.

4/26 Question: Do you still own any books/comics/toys/memorabilia from when you were a kid?

Answer: I do not. I wasn't really a reader back when I was a kid. The few books I was interested in were more animal books - like identification guides, dinosaur books. For awhile I was obsessed with reincarnation and had a few really weird books about that (it got me thinking - did my mother have those books and I found them? Or was I obsessed and she bought them for a very young girl?? lol) I also I found my parents copy of Helter Skelter that had pages and pages or gruesome pictures and I would hide and read it over and over and freak myself out.

But anyway - after I got married, my father decided to clean out our attic and threw all my stuff out without telling me so whatever I may have had is long gone.

Kevin on the other hand, has lots of cool stuff still in his childhood attic. His mom has sent a few things to us over the years.

She also gave me a very old Winnie-the-Pooh book because I LOVE him and her copy of a 1996 Better Homes & Garden cookbook. As you can see it's battered but I love looking at the old recipes.

5/3 Question: How do you feel when everyone loves a book except for you?

Question: Umm....this used to make me feel like something was wrong with me but over the years I realized that the bloggerverse can be pretty insular and you tend to hear how everyone is hyped about a certain book but not from the people who don't. No one wants to be THAT person shitting on the popular thing. lol

Readers tastes vary so much and we can't all love everything so it doesn't really bother me anymore.

I also try to stay away from any book that's hyped until it dies down and I can come to it without expectations.

I'm all caught up! Let me know what you think about any and all of the subjects above!

  1. Interesting topics! I love that you used to blog about politics. :) I've been on and off the blogosphere since 2011 but I'm oddly inspired again despite the lack of traffic. I think it's a me thing now instead of a I want all the comments thing.

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. I'm at the same place with blogging. I have a very small group and that's ok with me. I blog when I want about whatever I want.

  2. I want to read your politics blog lol. :)

I was going to do a WP blog too. I even had one started, template- wise, but never went anywhere with it once my Blogger one started going.

So,,, I remember that Star Wars book. Or the image anyway. And those luchboxes! Scooby Doooooooo...

    1. Ah yes, my political blog waaaay back in 2009 when I thought we should be reasonable because politics was getting too divisive lol

I do think I posted about the comic book before for some other post. We also still have his Scooby Doo sheets lol

  3. I bet the Epheron book would be good. She was so funny and witty. You had a blog about politics? We would never have been friends. LOL! I am so jealous you had a metal lunchbox. My mother wouldn't allow it. I also longed for one of those plastic halloween costumes (also verboten in my home). I often find myself on the outside of the hype, but I agree with you about taste being a valid variable.

    1. I had read another book by hers and loved it so I got this on clearance when the store was closing.

Why couldn't you have a metal lunchbox? That's all we had back then so we either had that or a lunch bag - which is what I typically used.

I think we still would have been friends! lol It was soooo long ago and it was about being moderate. It wasn't one of those screaming my opinions things. I was young and naïve and thought we could all get along lol

  4. I had several by Ephron on my TBR for year before I did a massive clean-out and deleted them. Oh how I love Pooh Bear. I have never seen that version of Winnie the Pooh. What a great gift from your MIL!

    1. I suppose I might find something older on my kindle but if it's that far back it's forgotten lol

Everyone has to love Pooh bear!!

  5. I used to have a bunch of reading memorabilia when I was little. I remember my favorite author wrote me a letter letter sent some swag. Unfortunately my mom hates clutter so it probably was all trashed.

    1. Yeah, that's what happened to me. My father decided to clean out the attic - it was already organized and there was plenty of space but he tossed it all.

  6. My TBR is over 1200 books long and I created it back in 2007-ish. I cannot remember which book was the first one I put on there. However, my parents gave me three books for my 10th birthday, but I hated reading back then. (I think they were hoping these books get me to start reading. Nope.) Since then, I’ve read one of them. The other two have been on my TBR the longest, I guess. They’re PINOCCHIO and THE RELUCTANT DRAGON.

I didn’t even know about Blogger. My husband introduced me to WordPress. I’ve always had my own domain because I used to fully code my own website in html. I love having a CMS (Content Management System) and not having to code everything by hand. But, I do love knowing how to code so I can tweak my blog to look and act the way I want it to.

The books I mentioned that my parents gave me are the only books I still have from when I was a kid. I cherish them with all my heart because both of my parents my have passed on.

It doesn't bother me if someone loves a book I didn't love. It bothers me far more when someone dislikes a book I love because I feel like they insulted my cat or something, lol.

    1. Is that a physical TBR or also TBR list- like in Goodreads? Mine is physical only.

I'm glad you have those books Jenni. My mom died when I was 15 and a lot of what my father threw out was things from her I would have liked to keep. I have a little stuffed Rudolph she bought me while we were out and all the jewelry my dad bought her from all over the world while he was in the navy. But that's it.

I know a lot of my friends get upset when someone doesn't like a book they loved but it doesn't phase me.

  7. Yeah I'm pretty used to not liking books that everyone loves at this point lol. It sort of confuses me sometimes, but that's usually about it. And oh gosh, old blogs, I had some of those. I would be embarrassed to see them now lol.

  8. I don't even know which books I've had on my TBR the longest... or actually I do. It's Little Women, my nan bought it me when I was about 12 so that's 19 years and it's still unread.

I'm a little like you when it comes to platform. I saw blogger and it looked easy so I gave it a try and I've just got comfortable with it despite its quirks. I don't invest enough time in blogging or gain enough views to make the migration feel worth it. It's a big investment for something I do in my freetime. I spend enough on books let alone anything else but I do sometimes wonder if WP might just be worth it for some of customisation.

I own quite a few books from when I was a kid... mostly Harry potter and a couple of classics like an old Beatrix Potter book and Dr Seuss. I didn't get massively into reading until I was a teenager so I have a few books from then by Sarra Manning but I did get rid of a big chunk of books from then. I mostly got my books from the library though.

    1. I had books on there longer but I got rid of 100's during our move so that helped lol

If I blogged or had the views like I used to, I would probably switch but it seems silly to pay and migrate for like 20 people reading this and blogging a few times a month.

  10. Great job catching up! While I do have stuff from my youth, there are so many things that I think "I wish I'd kept that." But it's only fleeting, like when someone else mentions it. I am keeping some of my kids' things for them... someday.

I had to pay someone to set up my blog, and now I love it... but if anything were to go wrong, I'd have to pay someone to help fix it *knock on wood*

    1. I think if I had done it several years ago when I blogged a lot I would be happy with it - especially if I was still writing a lot of reviews but it's not worth doing at this point.

Overall, I have no issues with blogger. I just type and hit publish lol There are problems but all formats have problems at times.

  11. I never thought I would have my blog for as long as I have. Back when I first started it, me and 5 other friends decided to start blogs to be able to keep in touch and share things. Then, one by one they all stopped blogging and I started posting other things on my blog. Been around 16 years now.

    1. Oh wow! That's a few years longer than me.

Most of my original blogger friends are long gone too but I still like having the outlet even if I'm not consistent anymore.

I also never thought anyone would ever see it lol

  12. I started on Blogger and loved it. However, everyone in the bookish community went on and on about how awesome WP was and so I made the switch to get a WP account. Even though I don't blog as much as I used to, I can't bring myself to get rid of my domain. LoL
    >.<

Oh...only 12 years then. I read Becky's comment where she says 19, so I guess you aren't that special 🤣.

"For awhile I was obsessed with reincarnation and had a few really weird books about that (it got me thinking - did my mother have those books and I found them? I knew about your politics blog, but not that it was on WP - and I surely didn't know about your reincarnation obsession or gruesome pictures addiction 🤣.

    1. I wasn't a big reader as a kid so I don't have too many older books. Plus I got ris of so many for the move.

I was OBSESSED with death and reincarnation lol It was weird for a little kid.

  14. woo hoo, you're all caught up - now for me to catch up on visiting ;)

LOL my oldest book was also from a bookstore now closed (and 2011)! If only we had time to read ALL the books huh?

I also own nothing from my childhood - that's neat about your husband and also being gifted some older items! (I adore winnie the pooh - what did you think of the movie a couple years ago? Pretty dark...)

"I also try to stay away from any book that's hyped until it dies down and I can come to it without expectations." <== I'm the same way, unless it's a book series/author I've already read enough to know that I will also join in on the hype. But yeah, doesn't bother me anymore either.

    1. I've been having to catch up on commenting too.

Was it a Borders closing sale? That's how I got most of my older books.

I have not seen the movie. I'm a purest and was afraid to see it lol
