Question: Have you looked at Twitter alternatives after it changed hands? Aare you using any?

Answer: I don't have it in me to build up anything new lol

Every time people get mad about certain platforms - Blogger, Twitter, Instagram, Bloglovin,  Goodreads etc...a flurry of new alternatives pop up and they don't really seem to go anywhere.

I'm barely doing any social media these days. I miss the early days and none of them are as fun anymore. Everyone is either hostile or guarded, so I'll take a wait and see approach to any new SM medium. If one really took off and seemed fun, I might give it a try but I'm not looking.

If Twitter goes belly up, then so be it.

Have you tried any Twitter alternatives? Do you still use Twitter as much these days?

  1. I have no complaint against Elon Musk, I actually like him quite a bit. And no plans to switch to an alternative haha I am rarely on twitter these days anyway. I am more on instagram anyway. And nothing is happening to Twitter lol if it does then it means the internet has gone down and we are in big trouble when that happens

    1. I think all the sites have gone down hill for years now and aren't particularly fun or useful to me these days.

  2. Nope, no Twitter alternatives for me. I'm 100% unaffected by the Twitter drama because I've never used Twitter regularly and even less so over the last couple years. I spend so little time on social media. It's never something that I walk away from feeling good/better. Most of it is so toxic and just hold no interest for me. So whatever happens on Twitter... I'm usually blissfully unaware. lol

Exactly...Maybe most people are like us - can't be bothered to open new accounts and try new things unless they seem like a good fit (or better, unless they take off) - so none of those alternatives get successful. Or maybe they're just poorer by default, not equipped to compete.

I did notice since I opened my second Twitter account (well before it changed hands) that you hardly get new followers anymore. With the first one, I often got new followers, while now it seems like no one finds me anymore or no one bothers with following me. I guess something changed, whether in the algorithm or in the users' stance...

The sad thing is, blogging does need Twitter as a third leg, so to speak. Authors and publishers are there - NG and EW expect you to have an account...

    1. I forgot...the new header is hilarious. I actually like how a butterfly or a flower can be bigger than your dogs and a tiny you can rest under a giant daisy 😂. I love the icon below the search bar too ("woof woof" LOL).

    2. I suppose some of these sites could grow more but it's hard to jump on to yet another forum and have it drift away. It's a waste of time to build things up.
Like you said, it's not at all like the early days. I could never get the following I have (and, honestly, it's just a handful that actually reads/chats with me.
Most people, including authors/professional types, limit their time on their now and are cautious to interact so it's tough.

    3. I am clearly not a type A /perfectionist type if the scale of my headers didn't give it away lol

  4. I'm kind of the same way. I'm still thinking of Tumblr since radio Silence lol but do I really want to do it? Not sure. :)

    1. I have a tumblr but I found it very difficult to interact on there (this was loooong ago though) & decided to focus here instead. I still think about reviving it though.

  5. I agree that social media isn't as fun as it used to be. I deleted my Facebook several years ago because it became too toxic (I had block my aunt). I never tried any of those Goodreads alternatives either. I am a lazy social media user

    1. Oh Facebook... yeah. I left that years ago. I have my account but it's archived.

  6. Interesting experiences. A lot depends on what one's aims are for using social media. For me, Twitter is merely a way to extend my other activity; it lures people to that and is not an end in itself. So changes at Twitter barely affect me.

    1. There used to be a lot of (drama free) interaction when I started so it was a lot of fun and I found a lot of new things to read, watch, do but now it's the same as what you use it for. I can't help but miss that and be bored with what it's become.

  7. No, if Twitter goes belly up I'm not going to replace it with anything else.

  8. I rarely use Twitter anymore as you've probably noticed, lol. so I have no plans on checking out the new platforms. I miss the old days too. I stopped engaging on most SM around 2016. Mr. Toupee ruined all the fun.

The only SM I really participate in now are Instagram and Goodreads, and since I'm not really very much right now, rarely GR. I don't mind that my SM usage is down, though, because I'm spending my time crocheting/knitting and in school. I'm determined to graduate even if it takes me another 4 years, lol.

    1. Yeah - it's just been downhill since then. The tone is different - even discussing non political things. Everyone is reserved and it's no longer fun.

  9. yes I do feel like the new ones went nowhere, and twitter became dull. But then I had noticed that for a time. I miss the old times, with peen Wednesday and wtf went on lol

    1. Yeah, no one does anything anymore. I barely even see those people tweet at all now. My best convos on there are via DM now so...I don't think there's anything that catches that level of fun and usefulness now. And I'm getting too old for the video ones like Tik Tok. Those just give me a headache lol

  10. I miss being able to reach out to my book friends. Twitter was so great for having a conversation or checking in with friends. Now I feel so isolated from them all.

    1. I REALLY miss old book twitter. It's so bland now. No one really discusses anything - the promo is impersonal - both for books and blogs. Blah

  11. I'm not on book Twitter much anymore, and seeing that I don't seem to be seeing anyone's tweets that I'm interested in (other bloggers) and they don't seem to be seeing mine... why bother. 😐 I only get around 80 blog hits from Twitter a month, so really, why bother. I keep telling myself that I will only be on it on Tuesdays or Wednesdays when I post a blog link, but gosh... it's still a bit addicting. My plan was to be on Bookstagram more.

I set up a Mastodon account for music, because that's where all the music people I follow with my personal Twitter were going, but seeing that Twitter didn't go belly up, none of them are posting over there. I also set up a Discord account, but every invite code I've been given to follow an account hasn't worked. 🙄

So more Bookstagram, less Twitter, and I already use Goodreads a lot more for interacting than most book bloggers. There are a lot of big readers out there who don't have blogs, or other book related SM who are on Goodreads. 🙂

    1. I was on discord but that really wasn't for me. I'm not even sure I want to *discuss* certain topics in a group like that anymore. I do like talking and finding out about books, music etc but I'm leery of any groups now. Or being that into anything. I get burned out on it and it's no longer fun if that makes sense.

I guess I just have my friends that I've always had lol It's hard to find new people now and I'm not sure I have the energy for it anymore.

I sound like an old fart haha!

    2. I think I'm less attached to Twitter because it's more book/blog promotion for me, and less "socializing" in a bookish friends' sense. I'm Facebook friends with all my old author friends and close blogging friends, most of whom don't blog anymore, but we still talk books on my personal account. Two of my old high school friends love reading and I'm FB friends with one of our public library's librarians, so we have some great book discussions. 📚

  12. I'm barely on twitter anymore. I've been working on building instagram but it's harder to get to know folks and build any kind of friendship. That said, given I have the attention span of a fly nowadays, I find it easier to update on bookish stuff than sitting down and going through blogs or updating my own! (Both are things I want to work on...)

TikTok is something I've finally caved to. *I still feel shame. 😂
I haven't a clue what I'm doing. Making connections - let alone friendships - on there seems impossible (possibly because I haven't a clue how it all works!) but I can lose hours shit scrolling and giggling at complete nonsense and I think I actually regret not caving into it sooner!

    1. Whatever is fun for you is where you should be. I don't really love videos so tik tok (even youtube) is our for me. Honestly, I don't feel like spending time on anything anymore lol
