Adventuring!

Once again, I'm not reading - UGH - but I'm going to share a fun adventure I had last weekend.

Kevin and I explored Ape Caves and a few surrounding area hikes. The caves are in Gifford Pinchot National Forest in WA - near Mount Saint Helens. There are 2, 3000 year old lava tubes - an upper and a lower. We did the 3/4 mile lower tube, as I am SUPER claustrophobic, and the lower is more open, shorter and flatter for walking. The upper tube is over 2 miles long, requires some rock pile climbs, an 8 foot wall with only a rope and much narrower sections. Nope! lol

Like I said - super claustrophobic - but I'm trying to overcome some of my phobias with (in therapist speak) exposer therapy. Kevin had actually taken his sister to the cave the week before so he could scope it out for me. Plus, I wouldn't be ruining his chance to see it if I did panic. BUT I DID NOT. I'm So proud of myself!! Here I am at "The meatball" lol

Woman, wearing orange jacket, standing with arms outstretched up at round rock suspended between two rock walls in an underground lava cave

It is 42 degrees, drippy and pitch black without lights. They recommend at least 2-4 light sources but Kevin had these superpowered head lamps from his work and they worked great.

Anyhoo...here are a few pics from the cave.

Upper left: man with head lamp shining brightly in underground lava tube. Upper right: rocky stairs from an underground lava tube wind up with a view of lush green and sunshine up to the exit. Lower left: a sunbeam shining through the trees. The end of the light makes a blueish, star shaped pattern on the ground. Lower right: inside the lava tube with light gray, curved walls. A pattern that looks like trees is on the left walls.

That's Kevin with his head lamp shining on the top left, to the right is when you emerge from the caves and climb the stairs back out. The bottom left is kind of cool. That's looking down going in (opposite angle of the exit). You can't even see the entrance because of the sun, but what caught my eye was that star like pattern on the ground. There's nothing there that should have made it. Aliens??? lol And the bottom right pic was cool because I thought it looked like little trees imprinted on the walls (left side).

Afterwards, we did a hike to June Lake nearby. It's a really cool spot with small waterfalls and dead tree stumps sticking out. It's kind of eerie but I loved it.

a lake with a waterfall straight ahead. Tall tree stumps and dead fallen logs litter the lake. Lush green trees and ferns surround the area.

And finally, a nearby trail that has incredible views of a lava canyon, where the lava had flowed through, and waterfalls. It kind of looked magical with how lush green it was and the water thundering through.

A valley of lush green trees is cut through the middle with a carved path of rock and a raging water from a nearby waterfall

We had a great time but I was EXHAUSTED!

Total change of subject, but with Halloween around the corner, I have two streaming rec's.

#1 is the new Goosebumps on Hulu. Great modern update on an older favorite. It's still directed at teens but i
t is darker that previous takes though. Which I love. It's topical with great acting and not cheesy, which can happen with a lot of YA-ish shows. My only complaint is not all the episodes drop before Halloween.

#2 is The Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix Ok, so this one is WEIRD and kind of batshit but I really enjoyed it. It is based on an Edgar Allen Poe and includes many of his poems and references to his works.

That's it for now!

Have you been on any fun adventures lately? Have any rec's for me to read/watch?

    1. Sometimes, when I walk around here, I almost feel like I'm a prehistoric land. I'm surprised I did so well though. I'm someone who freaks out in elevators lol

  2. That looks so cool and good for you for trying to overcome some phobias. I haven't heard of this park and I lived and hiked the area back in the 1990s. Guess I'll need to visit! Thanks for sharing.

    1. I'm working on it lol

There are SO many parks and trails in the area. My husband walked a different trail after going in the cave with his sister and we did two totally different ones. Then his friends recommended a few others. You could hike forever lol

  3. I love going through caves like that, its super neat to experience. It can be scary though, but very beautiful and life changing.

    1. I remember doing a few when I was younger and I freaked out lol It is wild to be standing there, in the aftermath of something so powerful. There are the tubes but also all the surrounding area is lava mixed with grass, woods and water. On the other side is Mount St Helen and that's a completely different type of destruction from the volcano eruption.

  4. Of course I some some of these pics on Twitter, but I loved to get the whole story (and I would love to hike on those trails myself). So thoughtful of Kevin to scout the place in order to be sure you could go. So I assume your breathing stayed good through all the ordeal? Do you happen to know why the first cave is called "The meatball" and why the lake is full of tree stumps?

    1. The meatball is just because it's round & that's what people came up with lol

The lake (& rock/ rushing water in those other two pics) are from the lava - same as what made the cave. The trees are from volcano eruptions. The area is HUGE and depending on what side of Mount St Helen's you are on, it will be completely desolate - all the trees gone, or just coming back, or heavily wooded.

    2. And my breathing was not too bad. I chose a really easy hike but it still ended up being a steady incline. My legs hurt afterwards more than anything lol

  5. Way to conquer your phobia! My husband is obsessed with the idea of exploring caves. We did a tour through the caves at Natural Bridge Caverns north of San Antonio last year. I'm less enthused by it haha. I loved watching The Fall of the House of Usher too!

    1. They are not for me either, but I will say, this one was fun. I would never do the upper cave though. I went about 1/4 into that one and you have to climb rock piles about 6-8 feet high and then crawl through smaller areas. That's the part I can't do. But I'm happy I conqured this one!
That show was wild but we loved it lol

  6. What a beautiful cave system. I especially like that third pic- I thought maybe that was the way in til I read your whole post, but it's soooo cool the way just a few steps takes you from an underground world to the outside lol.

The waterfall with the tree stumps prehistorical.

I was thinking of trying Usher.

    1. It is the way in! It's that underground picture looking up (top right) - except from the other side looking down. It's SO weird though. You can't see down at all because of the sun but it leaves that weird pattern on the ground.

Let me know if you watch. It's wild lol

  7. Wow, that's awesome. My late husband used to go exploring caves a few times but we didn't see anything like that. So cool.

  8. My comment disappeared... but that cave system looks so cool! And I love how prehistoric the lake looks with the waterfall and stumps... you can almost imagine a dinosaur rearing its head out of the lake ha

    1. I always weirdly think (for real lol) that a dinosaur is going to come crashing out of the trees at me, I did have a deer jump about 2 feet in front of me on a heavily wooded trail once. Scared the you know what out of me!

      (you went to spam)

    2. Some places are like tht. In college I had an apartment with a pond in the back and every time I looked out there I aimgined dinos!

  9. Kudos for not panicking because I think I would have lost it. lol All those small spaces... hard pass. Amazing photos, though!

    1. It was a much wider cave system than the upper (which I won't do) There aren't any small crawl spaces in this one. Even so, I would have panicked in the past.

Thanks for sharing your photos. The waterfall is beautiful. 💦

  11. Congrats on your cave exploring success! Your pictures are amazing. Yep, The Fall of the House of Usher series was wild. I'm a big Poe fangirl so I had to watch. It was good, but so gruesome!

That series was crazy but so fun. I'm glad several people I know loved it too. I was thinking it was too much for me to recommend lol

  12. Wonderful job on exploring the caves. It sounds absolutely beautiful, and yay for conquering a fear!!!

I really want to read The Fall of the House of Usher. I love Poe and his works. Good to know about Goosebumps too though! Spooky season is not over for me. LOL If you have Paramount+, I loved the show School Spirits.

    1. I haven't read it but the show was wild. It actually covers several of his stories and poems. I have to get back to Goosebumps. I hate when they drop one episode at a time.

  14. OMG!!!! THESE PHOTOS ARE INCREDIBLE! I'm so proud of you facing your fears in this way and it's great Kevin was able to go ahead of you to scope it out. I know that would make me feel (at least slightly lol) reassured. So awesome!

I keep hearing about House of Usher. I have no idea what it's about but it seems all the kids are raving about it so we shall see. I'm still doing Only Murders in the Building which I like, but I feel like it's getting a wee old, maybe? Though the chemistry between all the main characters is amazing.

    1. Thank you! It was a big step for me. I think I would have been more of a wreck if I didn't KNOW what was ahead of me (thanks to Kevin).

I liked OMitB but mostly because of the casts vibe. The story was a bit...scattered. House of Usher was WACKED lol

  15. Whoa, beautiful pictures! You're a cave explorer! I went on a few basic cave tours with a guide and a group as a kid, and I remember them once turning off the lights to show us how pitch black it was without them.

    1. I went to at least one in New England when I was a kid & I remember being freaked out lol But there were more narrow spots. This is basically an open cave where the lava flow went through. The upper caves are more like the others - open and narrow spots.
