Question: What genres do you tend to avoid?
Answer: My reading has changed so drastically over the years that is tough for me to answer.
I guess, the few genres that I still struggle with overall are:
Fantasy - I just don't care what color the sky or blades of grass are, or some new language. The world building tends to overshadow the characters & I glaze over the laborious descriptions.
Thrillers - I know this is a hot genre right now and I've tried, but it's another genre that features plot devices over character and it ends up being difficult for me to care what happens to anyone. And I almost always figure it out by the second or third chapter, so I'm left waiting for the supposedly brilliant investigator or whoever to figure things out.
Sci-fi - another one with details that escape me and I glaze over.
The two above genres (thrillers and sci-fi) have a somewhat procedural/bland tone to me when I'm reading and I get bored.
Multiverse - I hate it in movies and books. There are so many possibilities that anything can happen - then unhappen - then happen again. For me, nothing means anything after a certain point because it can all be reversed. (I'm so, SO sorry Roberta lol)
I say this with the caveat that I have found books I've loved in all of the above genres. But who knows! I used to be a hardcore - 5 book a week - romance genre junkie and now I can barely get through one. I used to HATE angsty YA, now it's what I prefer (in audio).
So, maybe next year I'll be an avid sci-fi reader lol Who knows!
What genres do you tend to stay away from?

ReplyDelete😂
"(I'm so, SO sorry Roberta lol)"
Maybe there's a version of you in a parallel reality who loves multiverse novels...😂
"So, maybe next year I'll be an avid sci-fi reader lol Who knows!"
At least you are potentially flexible...I have genres like romance or high fantasy that I know I'll never like...I'm not even going to try LOL
"Maybe there's a version of you in a parallel reality who loves multiverse novels...😂" This is possible!! lol
DeleteKAREN!! if you don't like thrillers can we be friends? Just kidding. Hope you are doing well. Love seeing you and the dogs on Instagram!
ReplyDeleteI'M SORRY. I can't make anyone happy between my anti thriller/multi-verse stance lol
DeleteYou made me giggle. I always think there are no-go genres, but then I will read something from that genre and enjoy it. It may not be my go-to, but a good book is a good book.
ReplyDeleteI seem to be able to read different genres when it comes to audio so a lot of not for me books turn into some of my favorites in that format.
DeleteI like anything that's good. I mostly go for Paranormal romance. I tend to stay away from Historical.
ReplyDeleteI like not so accurate historical romance lol Real feisty girls that can probably get away with more than it was in reality.
DeleteLol I don't think I've read much multiverse, but yeah, I don't want to feel like none of what's happening matters. I am less "stay away from genres" and more "stick to genres" and whatever happens to crossover into those is fine.
ReplyDeleteI like how Roberta puts it - she sees it as all the possibilities but it annoys me.
DeleteI like your take too. That's how I end up reading outside mine. It has things I already enjoy with a genre twist. Audiobooks have opened up a lot for me. WIth Libro.fm it's free to try and listening somehow changes it for me.
LOL. We are almost complete opposites. I can agree on no thrillers.
ReplyDeleteAre we?! I didn't think you read fantasy or si-fi, multiverse either. I know we differ on romance right now but I do love the genre - I just seem to be in a slump there.
DeleteMy first love of reading was sci-fi and fantasy. I don't read it as much anymore, but I still enjoy it. My favorite books from childhood are all sci-fi and fantasy books. :-)
DeleteI did not know that!
DeleteAngsty YA works well in audio
ReplyDeleteIt does for me!
