Mid-Year Audiobook Challenge Check-In

I'm posting (late of course) for the Audiobook Challenge Mid-Year check-in.

I signed up at the Weekend Warrior (I’m getting the hang of this) 5-10 level and I hit my goal!

I'm kind of proud of this one because 1) I don't do challenges other than the generic goodreads (and I've greatly reduced my # over the years) & 2) I really struggled over the years with audiobooks so to think I could actually meet my goals in this challenge is awesome!

👍👎

My favorite, just based on narration, was The Walls Around Us. It's a strange book and I know I would have hated it if I read it the traditional way but the audio was eerie and emotion filled so it kept my attention.

Born a Crime, narrated by Noah was also excellent.

Book Lovers was really good too. I usually hate romance in audio but this one worked for me.

The Kindred was a sweet YA with aliens and romance. Very old school YA but in a fun way. Great narration!

How to Be Perfect was fun if you don't normally like audiobooks since it had a cast of (famous) narrators and fun facts about ethics.

The Woman in the Library had a good narrator but the story itself annoyed me and Something Wilder is eh - the main characters sound sad and depressing to me.

I think I might even be on track to complete or move up another level -  I don't want to get cocky lol but stenographer seems doable (although I cannot listen while multitasking!) and I'm only be 5 away from Socially Awkward (which IS ME).

  • Stenographer (can listen while multitasking) 10-15
  • Socially Awkward (Don’t talk to me) 15-20

    😂

Good luck! I love your mini-me graphics BTW. Which program/site do you make them with?

  2. Congrats on hitting your goal! I can listen while doing hair/makeup in the morning, or while driving, but that's the extent of it. Otherwise I need to really pay attention to what I listening to.

    1. Oddly, I can listen while fiddling on the computer which makes NO SENSE lol I can't do housework or walk or anything like that though.

    1. It took me YEARS. I started with podcasts, then did full casts books like Sadie (which also has a podcast within it). I can't do my usual genres on audio though - like romance or cutesy YA. So I tend to read really outside my comfort zone with them.

    2. I've just started listening to more podcasts. Mostly dramatic ones but also some regular ones- mostly to do with comics or whatever. Maybe I'll work my way into audio... :)

  4. Yay, go you! It's great when the audio actually improves a book.

  5. Congratulations for hitting your goal so early. I am trying to remember the narration for The Walls Around Us, but all I remember is how dark and weird the story was. Funny you struggle with romance on audio, that's my go-to.

    1. I know! It's so weird but I usually hate the voices. The women come off whiny and men growls and it just doesn't work for me.
But more angsty ya does - which I can't normally read.

  6. Congrats on meeting your goal. :D When I read Born a Crime the first time, I read the physical book. Then, we read the book for our book club. That time I read it via the audiobook. The audiobook was so much better. I love Trevor Noah and I really adored hearing his stories in his own voice. :D

  9. Yay! My sister harped on me for years to try audiobooks, but I didn't think I'd like them. I think my problem came from the first audio I tried, which was a full cast dramatization (with sound effects) of Neil Gaimen's Neverwhere. I don't think I made it through the second chapter. 😅 My sister started playing them in her car when we went shopping and I finally realized I liked them. It was her way of getting her one non-reader son to "read" books. 😎

    Congrats on your stats! 🏆

    1. I used to listen to comedians and bios like a decade ago so I thought that's what I would like now but nope.
It took me several years to find what worked and expand my attention span lol

  10. Liking the new look to your blog. A while since I have participated in a challenge {other than GR} this probably isn't one for me but you go girl, turn it up a notch.
